Dogs are dubbed as man’s best friends because these animals are generally loyal, affectionate, and friendly and show their gentle nature to the family. Not all dogs though are the epitome of gentleness as a number of breeds are noted to have a ferocious nature and ownership of these dogs is actually restricted by law. Guard and protection dogs are specifically developed to have an aggressive and ferocious temperament.
Dogs are the most popular choice for a pet as after domestication, these loyal and affectionate animals have become man’s steadfast companion for centuries. A well mannered dog can easily bare its teeth and show an aggressive temperament as in spite of the long years of domestication the ferocious nature remained. Because of this, over 4 million dog bite incidents occur in United States every year. Majority of the dog bite cases were caused by the victim’s own dogs. It is therefore necessary to learn how approach a dog.
It is necessary for dog owners to learn how to safely approach the dog. Dogs are territorial animals and food motivated as well. A dog will guard its territory, food and toys. Even a well mannered dog would growl and bare its strong needle sharp teeth if it perceives a threat to what was considered as its territory. Taking away the dog’s toy or the food bowl or to approach the dog hastily would never be a good idea. Not knowing that your purpose in taking away the bowl is to add more food, the action will stir up the dog‘s latent aggressive temperament.
Children will always be enticed to pat a dog. Kids would always want to hug and cuddle a sleeping pet. A pat would startle a sleeping pet causing it to instinctively bite. Children must be cautioned not to startle a dog. When approaching the dog, make sure that it can see you.
The dog may tolerate the family members to invade its territory but a ferocious temperament will be shown at the intrusion of other people. Dog lovers will always be enticed to touch a handsome dog. The handsome dog may have an aggressive temperament . Ask the owner if it is alright to touch the dog. Slowly approach the dog but don’t stare directly as it can be misconstrued by the dog as a challenge. Extend a hand with the fingers curled under or the palm down to be sniffed by the dog. A dog that wants to be friends would sniff the offered hand.
